Madeleine L’Engle, generation X’s J. K. Rowling, passed away yesterday. Had the internet and consumer-oriented media been around a few decades ago Charles Wallace would have been a household name like Harry Potter.
Of course back then the fantasy genre was not as accepted in the mainstream and in fact Madeleine’s most famous book, ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ - a personal favorite - has been banned in several places.
A book….banned. I can’t imagine the chaos that trying to ban Harry Potter for its magic and fantastic imagery would unleash with the current pop-culture media.
All you newbie fantasy buffs should check her work out..if you can find it.
You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children. -Madeleine L’Engle
