Courier imap + fam problem - the real fix

Wednesday February 8, 2006

This error message keeps popping up in the server logs:

Failed to create cache file: maildirwatch (user) Error: Input/output error Check for proper operation and configuration of the File Access Monitor daemon (famd)

Typing it into Google reveals many other people with the problem. Then there is the Courier FAQ, which is less than helpful:

Q: Repeated messages in syslog: “Failed to create cache file: maildirwatch (user) Error: Input/output error Check for proper operation and configuration of the File Access Monitor daemon (famd).” How can I solve it?

This means that Courier was compiled with File Alteration Monitor (FAM), but FAM is not running, or is not configured. If you have FAM installed you can add it to a runlevel and start it. Some FAM configuration use portmapper, so you will need to have portmap running also. You can also see “man 8 imapd” for more information.

But thankfully, one kind soul has posted the real answer. THANK YOU!

I have an Xbox, but I’m really not a console gamer. Colin plays it the most, and yes, he can out maneuver me.

Since he doesn’t read, he remembers screens by sequence and pattern recognition instead. This is cool except that he goes into the language settings and sets the language to Chineese because he thinks it looks cool.

It can be frustrating for those of us in the family that can read. One of the side effects of this for him though is that he’s actually learning a little Chineese now that he is learning to read.

I don’t know how handy being able to write “Level 1″, “Game Over”, and “Press Start” in Chineese will be as opposed to “American Embassy”, “Mens Restroom”, or “Dong, Where is my automobile?” but thats his problem.

Brian’s Cream Soda

Thursday September 1, 2005

After a day at Kings Island on Sunday I was a little dehydrated and didn’t feel like the usual scotch neat would be the thing to do. So I decided to experiment. I had some Ginger Ale, but needed something stronger to wind down with. I decided to suppliment that with coconut rum.

This proved to be a great success. It tastes just like cream soda. It was about 4-6 ounces of rum and 12 ounces of ginger ale. Searching the site that is responsible for the stocking of my liquor cabinet - webtender.com - shows nothing so I hereby name this drink Brian’s Cream Soda.

I did find something on the Captain Morgan’s site called a “Happy Skipper” that is rum, ginger ale, and lime juice. I think going to a bar and ordering a “Happy Skipper” is going to get you slugged - unless its a gay bar in which case they may have a different definition of “slugged”. Besides, Jonna is in charge of rum procurement and we are a Parrot Bay family.

Cheers, internet.
