Brian’s Cream Soda

Thursday September 1, 2005

After a day at Kings Island on Sunday I was a little dehydrated and didn’t feel like the usual scotch neat would be the thing to do. So I decided to experiment. I had some Ginger Ale, but needed something stronger to wind down with. I decided to suppliment that with coconut rum.

This proved to be a great success. It tastes just like cream soda. It was about 4-6 ounces of rum and 12 ounces of ginger ale. Searching the site that is responsible for the stocking of my liquor cabinet - webtender.com - shows nothing so I hereby name this drink Brian’s Cream Soda.

I did find something on the Captain Morgan’s site called a “Happy Skipper” that is rum, ginger ale, and lime juice. I think going to a bar and ordering a “Happy Skipper” is going to get you slugged - unless its a gay bar in which case they may have a different definition of “slugged”. Besides, Jonna is in charge of rum procurement and we are a Parrot Bay family.

Cheers, internet.

No More California Raisins

Thursday July 14, 2005

I am in Los Angeles this week. I am writing to report to you a new fad that I’ve seen out here. They have been saying for many years now that the sun is bad for you. This is not new news across the country where the summer suntan is now less popular. There are other solutions to tanning, but there are drawbacks to those.

The “mystic spray tan” washes out over the course of a week to 10 days. There are “self tanning” lotions but many of those are beta-carotene based and make you look orange.

Here in LA its just not acceptable to not have a tan. The girls have dealt with this by going with the tanning lotions. Since they all do it, they all look orange, but it’s socially acceptable - kind of like frivolous plastic surgery. I do not know if they will start to refer to them as California Carrots, but I will keep you posted.

Welcome to Wordpress

Sunday June 19, 2005

I have started using Wordpress to manage this site instead of my home-brew system, ProntoType.

I built ProntoType because I needed sub-categories. Wordpress has sub-categories. ProntoType also had another unique feature. Categories could have custom data fields associated with them. There were good reasons for this. For example: in my Wine category you could search by the type of wine, the label, vintage, or any of the other data types.

Another example is the weblog category in ProntoType. This is where I point out interesting articles or sites on the web and ProntoType had a specific field for the URL so that it could be consistently presented.

I switched to WordPress mainly because I wanted to update the look of the site and my style sheet was a nightmare. It was easier to switch CMS, select a theme, and customize it…I think.
