Desktop Clock

Friday July 27, 2007

Many people have commented on the big clock that I keep on my computer desktop. In the past I have had to explain that this is a linux thing however there is now a version for windows thanks to Yahoo! building (copying?) a Widget set.

Yahoo Widgets can be downloaded at http://widgets.yahoo.com

A version of the Chrome Clock is here.

UPDATE: Yahoo didn’t copy Konfabulator, they bought it and reworked it into Yahoo Widgets.

Google Buys Postini

Tuesday July 10, 2007

Google has purchased Postini. Over the winter I re-architected Pixel Mechanix web services and after looking at how my servers and I were spending our time, I realized that the bulk of that was on fighting spam: Keeping up with blocklists, researching blocked emails for my clients, and adjusting filters.

This was taking a toll on me and my servers. I have never charged for email and have included it as part of the web hosting packages, but I made the tough decision to start and I cut a decent deal to bring Postini to my clients.

It has helped tremendously and while there are a few spams that make it through the filters, it is a rare exception. Any mail that is blocked gets put in a quarantine and people get an email listing them so that they can retrieve messages that they need to.

Users can tune their own filters, block lists, and white lists.

Taking aim at one of Microsoft’s core franchises, Google said that it would acquire the e-mail security and management company Postini for $625 million in cash.

Here’s hoping they don’t change a thing. Postini has a great thing going.

How the Mondavis Lost an Empire

Thursday July 5, 2007

One of the first things I learned about wine: Mondavi sucks. The Wall Street Journal has a nice writeup explaining why the biggest name became a big flop.

“But by early 2004, Robert Mondavi Corp.’s reputation for high-quality wines had eroded, and the House of Mondavi was rent by conflict. His hand-picked successor, son Michael, had been removed as chairman, and the Mondavi family was on the brink of losing control of the company. Indeed, behind Michael’s ouster was a closely guarded secret: Robert faced a personal financial crisis that threatened to embarrass him and destroy his leg”
